The CPU now has a discussion list. Everyone who signed up for the CPU online, and everyone who came to the CPU training and gave us their e-mail address should be on this list.

We're using the list to post meeting dates, share information, and build our power base.

Great start for CPU!

Fifteen Chicago Parents Union members from 12 CPS schools took their initial training last Friday and Saturday, and will begin the fall 2009 school year as CPU union stewards.

We leaned all about parents rights and effective advocacy strategies. We heard from our partners from the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, the Center for Conflict Resolution, Northwestern's Children and Family Justice Center, and the law firm of Elaine Siegel and Associates.

We had a quick "Media 101" class from the managing editor of Medill News.

And we talked about a lot of issues that affect parents out in the schools.

This was just the beginning. If you missed these sessions, you can jump in by coming to the CPU union steward general meeting on Saturday, August 29, at 10 am at PURE, 100 S. Morgan. Training for union stewards will be ongoing, but you must be trained to be a CPU union steward.

Materials and links to materials used in the training will be posted online shortly both on the PURE web site and at www.chicagoparentsunion.org.

PARENTS UNITE
Written by Steve Ross
Thursday, 30 July 2009

Teachers have a union to look out for their best interests. So should parents!

This is the reason we are launching the Chicago Parents Union. Parents helping Parents is what we are pushing -- a sharing of our resources and ideas is our goal -- and we need as many parents as we can to sign up to make this thing work.

LSCs can be a great way for parents' voices to be heard, but powers in the city are trying to destroy LSCs through school closings, charter and assorted alternative schools models taking their place with appointed Councils that have no real authority. We parents need a power structure, by parents, for parents, that no one can take away.
